80 years ago - Mafia boss Al Capone released from prison

Al Capone is one of the most notorious criminals in America. The mafia boss controlled Chicago's underworld in the 1920s and 1930s. This is the 80th anniversary of his early release from prison. To mark the occasion, we're introducing some of the most dangerous gang bosses in crime history.

New York - Alphonse Gabriel Capone was the archetype of the American gang boss. From 1926 to 1931 the leader of the "Chicago Outfit", an Italian-American mafia syndicate of the American Cosa Nostra, controlled the Chicago underworld.

In the metropolis on the southwest bank of Lake Michigan in the US state of Illinois, he did his business with illegal gambling, prostitution, extortion and illegal alcohol trade.

1931: Al Capone is convicted of tax evasion

Born on January 17, 1899 in the New York borough, Al Capone was sentenced to 11 years in prison on October 24, 1931 for tax evasion. Initially, the felon was imprisoned in federal prison in Atlanta, Georgia.

In 1934 he was moved to Alcatraz, the notorious high security gymnast in San Francisco Bay.

1939: Al Capone's health deteriorates

There his health deteriorated. The syphilis he had contracted from a prostitute in his youth was becoming more and more evident. Al Capone looked increasingly confused and disoriented. The 40-year-old came to the infirmary, where he stayed until November 1939.

The prison authorities no longer saw the seriously ill as a threat to society and decided to release him early from prison because of his good conduct. After six years and five months, Al Capone was released.

1947: Al Capone dies in Florida

Al Capone spent the last years of his life in his mansion on Palm Island, Florida. He died in a family circle on January 25, 1947 from the effects of his syphilis.
