With a quick update, Apple closes a critical security hole in Webkit that affects practically every app. An update is also available for older devices, to version 12.5.2.

Apple has released a small update for iOS and iPadOS that brings the version number to 14.4.2. The release notes are kept short:

This update provides important security updates and is recommended for all users.

On its security support page, Apple reports that this is a security update for Webkit, which means that any app that loads content from the web could be affected:

Closed the zero-day gap in Webkit

Available for:iPhone 6s and newer, iPad Pro (all models), iPad Air 2 and newer, iPad 5th generation and newer, iPad Mini 4 and newer and iPod Touch (7th generation).

Effects: Processing maliciously crafted web content can lead to universal cross-site scripting. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited.

Description: This problem was addressed through improved object lifetimes management.

CVE-2021-1879: Clement Lecigne from the Google Threat Analysis Group and Billy Leonard from the Google Threat Analysis Group

In other words, this is an important security update and you should download and install it right away. Apple is still actively working on iOS 14.5, but don't wait for it to be released to protect yourself from a serious web vulnerability. The final version of iOS 14.5 and iPadOS 14.5 with numerous innovations should not come until after Easter.

For older devices that don't support iOS 13 or iOS 14, Apple released iOS (and iPadOS) 12.5.2 with the same fix. This applies to the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, iPod Touch (6th generation), iPad Mini 2 and 3 and the original iPad Air.

How to update to iOS 14.4.2

To update your iPhone or iPad, open the Settings app, tap General, then tap Software Update, and follow the instructions. If you don't see the update right away, be patient as it may take a while to become available everywhere.
