What are some great movies to watch
Tips for STAYING INSIDE: Films are windows to the outside!
> Click here for the ONLINE FILM TIP OF THE WEEK (PDF)
There are many offers against the Corona-Koller on the Internet. We can experience the outside world through films that are accessible online. And not only can we watch these films, but we can also continue to work with them creatively and communicatively.
Customers of the media center can now make online films available to the participants of their digital educational event (e.g. distance learning, adult education, youth work ...) via a link. In this way, groups can watch films together and talk about them without all participants being registered as customers
(> Information on the new "Share online media" feature).
Many television stations have special offers for families and schoolchildren in their media libraries.
Because of the corona crisis, some film distributors and cinemas are offering their films intended for theatrical exploitation as video on demand (VoD) on the Internet in addition to the established streaming services - and thus partially support the cinemas and filmmakers involved financially.
Large US film studios are also making the latest films available online at cinema prices: first Universal, then Warner Bros. and Sony Entertainment (> information).
Since many film festivals had to be canceled, 20 major festivals, including Cannes, Locarno, New York and Berlin, jointly organized the global online film festival WE ARE ONE. From May 29 to June 7, 2020, films that were intended for premieres could be seen on YouTube for free and without advertising - donations to fight the coronavirus were asked for. Many of the films can still be streamed on the> YouTube channel WE ARE ONE!
Further film festivals have been accessible on the Internet in recent months. Information and links to the online festivals can be found below: +++ RECOMMENDATIONS AND SPECIAL ONLINE FILM OFFERS +++.
On the video platform Youtube and other channels there are many individual and collective offers from religious communities, e.g. live streams of church services.
Numerous other videos can help at home for longer periods of time, e.g. fitness courses from sports clubs and much more.
Films on current topics can be accessed quickly and free of charge via video platforms.
For example, the> short film series "CORONA IN THE PROVINCE" is recommended, in which the filmmakers Robert Krieg and Monika Nolte (Krieg & Nolte) show on their Vimeo channel how different people in the German province deal with the corona pandemic.
But caution is also advised: right-wing extremist groups are increasingly using the corona crisis to spread disinformation, conspiracy theories and messages of hate via YouTube videos and social media (> Info).

Methodical tips for CREATIVE EMPLOYMENT WITH FILMS:
Watching movies is fun. But it is even more fun to continue to occupy yourself with what you have seen and to be creative yourself.
In the following, we will introduce you to some methods that are suitable for getting on the track of the subject of the film or its aesthetics.
Some methods can be practiced alone (e.g. painting pictures, developing a different plot or making a film yourself with a mobile phone, tablet, etc.)
Other methods can be used, for example, to share the impressions and interpretations of the film watched together in the family. An exciting feature of the medium is that everyone sees a film with his or her own eyes and relates to different previous experiences and interests ...
Of course, methods can always be changed and adapted to personal preferences and different films.
+++ Methods for individuals or small groups +++
- Paint a scene
The individuals or participants (PT) recreate the picture or scene that they remember most or that they like best. If several participants take part, it can be interesting to discuss afterwards whether the pictures match or differ from the impressions of the others.
- Design a movie poster
- Inventing alternative courses of action or a continuation of the film story
A story outline (a brief description of the events and scenes) or a script can be created for this purpose. A storyboard (sketchy visual representation of crucial scenes) can also be drawn.
Of course, you can also shoot your own film. Recording and editing short scenes is relatively easy with a mobile phone, smartphone or tablet. An animated film can also be rotated using these means in stop-motion technology (toy figures or the like are recorded in individual images so that the sequence creates the impression that the figures are moving).
+++ Methods for groups at home (family), at school, in online conferences, etc. +++
- Role play dialogue
The participants each take on the role of a film character. After a short preparation time, the participants come into contact with one another in their roles as part of the film plot or in another, invented situation and present a dialogue scene.
- Fictional interviews as role play
Each small group interviews a character who is related to the plot in the form of a role play.
- Observation orders
Before the film is viewed, different assignments are distributed (e.g. "How does a certain film character behave?") And then compiled and discussed.
- Characterization of the main characters
In short key words, the family members each characterize a main person on a sheet or an index card. The categories are given, e.g .: name, age, interests, special character traits, special experiences. The individuals introduce their main character to the others.
- Relationship diagram
The names of the main characters are written on a poster at a large distance from each other. Prepared images or the index cards / sheets created in a previously developed characterization (see above) can also be attached to the poster. In the vicinity of these names or pictures, the PT write the names of the people (or stick a picture) who are related to them. The intensity and type of relationship can be made visible through the distance or through short texts on the connecting line.
- Mind map on important terms of the film plot
- Talk show / panel of experts on a topic of the film
The participants play different roles: a moderator and several experts from different areas of society and with different specialties and opinions.
After a limited preparation time, the talk show will be staged. The moderator leads the discussion, ensures that speaking times are evenly distributed and that the airtime is filled.
- Writing conversation / blog on a question raised by the film (can possibly also be practiced online with participants who are not in the same place)
For example, "What happens if a film character behaves differently than the film suggests at a concise point in the plot?": A participant begins and writes an (everyday) situation in at most two sentences on a piece of paper and gives it further.
The next participants add subsequent events in up to two sentences each, so that a causal chain of events results in a curious story.
- How does the film go on?
The action is continued individually or collectively (e.g. in a writing conversation, see above).
(...) many other ways to continue to deal with the film you have seen are conceivable.
For even more methods / didactic tips on specific films and topics, we recommend our> film work aids.
We wish you a lot of fun with the films and hope that you will get through the time of the corona crisis well!
