Fast and pray

The Bible in the standard translation

The Gospel according to Matthew, chapter 6

Mt 6.1Be careful not to show your righteousness before the people; otherwise you have no reward to expect from your Heavenly Father.Mt 6.2So when you give alms, don't let it trumpet like the hypocrites do in synagogues and in the streets to be praised by the people. Amen, I tell you: they have already received their wages.Mt 6.3When you give alms, you don't want your left hand to know what your right hand is doing.Mt 6.4Your alms will remain hidden and your Father, who also sees what is hidden, will reward you for it..

From Prayer - The Lord's Prayer

Mt 6.5When you pray, don't do like the hypocrites. They like to stand in synagogues and on street corners while praying so that people can see them. Amen, I tell you: they have already received their wages.Mt 6.6But you go into your room when you pray and shut the door; then pray to your Father who is in secret. Your father, who also sees the hidden, will reward you for it.Mt 6.7When you pray, you should not babble like the heathen, who think that they will only be heard if they utter many words.Mt 6.8Don't do it like them; because your father knows what you need before you ask him.Mt 6.9This is how you should pray: Our Heavenly Father, hallowed be your name,Mt 6.10your kingdom come / your will be done / on earth as it is in heaven.Mt 6.11Give us the bread we need today.Mt 6.12And forgive us our debts, / just as we have forgiven our debtors.Mt 6:13And do not lead us into temptation / but save us from evil.Mt 6:14For if you forgive people their wrongdoings, then your heavenly Father will forgive you too.Mt 6:15But if you do not forgive people, then your Father will not forgive you for your wrongdoings either..

From fasting

Mt 6.16When you fast, do not scowl like the hypocrites. They appear gloomy to make people know that they are fasting. Amen, I tell you: they have already received their wages.Mt 6:17But you anoint your hair when you fast and wash your face,Mt 6.18so that people do not notice that you are fasting, but only your Father, who also sees the hidden; and your Father, who sees what is hidden, will reward you..

From wrong and right care

Mt 6:19Do not collect treasures here on earth, where moths and worms destroy them and where thieves break in and steal them,Mt 6.20but gather yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor worm destroy them and no thieves break in and steal them.Mt 6.21Because where your treasure is, there is your heart too.Mt 6.22The eye gives light to the body. If your eye is healthy, then your whole body will be bright.Mt 6.23But if your eye is sick, then your whole body will be dark. If the light in you is darkness, how great must the darkness be!Mt 6.24No one can serve two masters; he will either hate the one and love the other, or he will stick to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Mammon.Mt 6.25That is why I say to you: do not worry about your life and that you have something to eat, nor of your body and that you have something to wear. Isn't life more important than food and the body more important than clothing?Mt 6.26Look at the birds of the sky: they don't sow, they don't reap, they don't gather supplies in barns; your Heavenly Father feeds them. Aren't you worth much more than they are?Mt 6.27Who of you, with all your worry, can extend your life for even a small period of time?Mt 6.28And what do you care about your clothes? Learn from the lilies that grow in the field: They don't work and they don't spin.Mt 6.29But I tell you, even Solomon in all his splendor was not dressed like one of them.Mt 6.30But if God dresses the grass so splendidly that is in the field today and will be thrown into the fire tomorrow, how much more then you, you of little faith!Mt 6.31So don't worry and don't ask: what should we eat? What should we drink? What should we wear?Mt 6.32Because that's what the heathen are about. Your Heavenly Father knows you need all of these.Mt 6.33But for you it must first be about his kingdom and his righteousness; then everything else is added to you.Mt 6.34So don't worry about tomorrow; because tomorrow will take care of itself. Every day has its own plague enough.
