What to try if you can't install or activate Office for Mac

The installer for Office 2016 for Mac cannot be downloaded.

  • Make sure the internet works on the Mac you want to install Office on. Stop any other downloads that may be active.

  • If you've started a download and it's interrupted, delete the download file by dragging it into the waste paper bin pull. Empty the trash. Then start the download again by going to

    Note: To activate Office for Mac, you need a valid Microsoft 365 account with the appropriate license or a Microsoft account associated with a one-time purchase. If you don't have such an account, you can only read files, not create or edit them.

  • Still not working Open Safari and switch to Settings > Tab security, and make sure Activate JavaScript is activated. Then switch to the tab privacy, and choose Manage website data > Remove all out. Start the download again using Safari.

I can't find the installer or Office apps after downloading

If you are looking for the Office Installer:

The location on your Mac will vary depending on which browser you used to download the installer. It is recommended that you use Safari for the best experience.

  • Look in your DownloadsFolder after the file, which is usually next to the waste paper bin is located.

  • If not DownloadsFolder appears, open it safariand navigate to view > show downloads.

Note: If you've changed your download location and can't remember the new location, you can go to safari > Settings > Generally check.

If you are looking for the Office apps after installing:

After you have installed the Office suite, you can find it via the Launchpad .

Or you open it finder > Applications, and scroll down to Microsoft.

Close your browser and then try again.

The Installer.pkg file downloads but does not start

  • Wait for the download to complete. It can take a while, be interrupted and restarted. The final file size is around 1.5 GB.

  • Move the Microsoft Office Installer.pkg file from the Downloads folder to the desktop and double-click it to start.

  • If it still doesn't work, delete the installer.pkg file and empty the waste paper bin. Now download the Safari browser again from

  • If you haven't already, update your device to Mac OS Sierra 10.12.

  • click on OKand wait 10 seconds. Move the download file to the desktop and try again.

  • Hold up CTRL, and click the file on the desktop. click on to open.

An "Installation Failed" error message appears during installation

  • The downloaded file is damaged. Drag the installer file into the waste paper binto delete them. Empty the trash.

Unsupported operating system error / incorrect version purchased

If you purchased Office 2016 as a one-time purchase for PC instead of Mac (or vice versa), the error message "Unsupported operating system"is displayed. In this case, you need to contact Microsoft support.

The installer hangs while checking

The bug stating that Microsoft Office Installer.pkg cannot be opened because the file is from an unknown developer has been fixed in an update from Apple.
