Why is Prayag called Raj Allahabad

India

Kumbh Mela is the largest religious gathering in the world. In 2019, 20 million pilgrims were counted on the day we visited (or the first of the two days). However, this was not the day with most of the pilgrims. It was the last day of a "Royal Bath" (Shahi Snan), Basant Panchami. On these days, there are 3, processions to the bathing area on the Ganges with religious leaders ("Baba") and their disciples and admirers take place from the early morning. All in all, the Kumbh 2019 lasted from January 5th. until March 4th, but dismantling began after the last Shahi Snan.

The Kumbh Mela takes place in a fixed rhythm, every 12 years there is a Kumbh Mela in Allahabad, in between each a smaller version, previously called Ardh Kumbh Mela (2019 was one of these), but this is now only called Kumbh Mela , instead the 12-year event Maha Kumbh Mela, what has changed in the name of the Maha Kumbh Mela, which has only taken place every 144 years since then, I don't know. The Kumbh Mela takes place in Haridwar offset by 3 years, there is also a Kumbh Mela in Nasik and Ujjain, offset in the same year or one year. The four holy places are each related to holy rivers, most important of course the Ganges in Haridwar and in Allahabad the confluence of three rivers, namely the Ganges and the Yamuna and the invisible Saraswati river

As part of the general renaming of places in India, Allahabad was renamed Prayagraj in 2018 with a clearly anti-Muslim tendency. (The earlier renaming usually concerned colonial names, Allahabad has been called that since the 16th century)
