Why is Instagram so valued?

Why Instagram engagement is so important

What is meant by engagement?

Engagement is about the level of participation, interest, and interaction your followers show towards your photos, videos, Instagram stories, or other content. If your followers react to a post, for example with a comment or like, this is counted as engagement. In order to be able to measure the engagement precisely, there is the so-called engagement rate.

Here are some examples of what is considered engagement (or interaction):

  • Likes
  • Comments
  • Views
  • shared content
  • opened links / images

Why is engagement so important?

Engagement is the most important metric on Instagram as it shows how much an audience cares about your content. When customers react to your content, this ensures better visibility and greater reach. For example, if a follower shares one of your posts, it will be seen by more people. The engagement is therefore also responsible for word of mouth and increases the credibility of your company. Also, Instagram highlights posts from accounts that have higher engagement in their feeds. Even after a campaign, this key figure can provide important information. It can be used to measure the success of your influencer campaign, as it shows how well your content was received.

How to calculate your engagement rate

Likes and comments are the most accessible metrics on Instagram and can be used for an easy calculation of engagement. All you have to do is add up the number of likes and comments, divide them by your number of followers, and then multiply by 100 to get the percentage. Example: Your account has 10,000 followers and you want to calculate the engagement rate of a post with 150 likes and 50 comments:

Engagement rate = (150 +50) / 10,000 x 100, which corresponds to a share of 2%.

For example, if you want to get the engagement rate of 2 or more posts, you first need to determine the average number of likes and comments for each post. If you have access to your social media analyzes, you can also calculate your engagement rate using the same metrics, divided by the people who saw the post (impressions).

On Instagram, a good engagement rate for influencers averages 1% to 3%.

Tips to increase your Instagram engagement

Always be authentic

Being authentic means not just following a trend or copying someone else's opinion. You have to really live your Instagram brand and the content you post has to be real. To show that you are believable, you can show your audience raw images, take a look behind the scenes, and show your most human side. You should also have conversations with your followers in the comments and support or inform them. Authenticity creates trust with your followers, which also leads to a higher level of engagement in your posts.

Respond to your followers

As a general rule, you should try to respond to any comments you receive, especially in the first few hours after posting new content. When you respond to and interact with your followers, they will feel connected and valued with you. And since engagement rate is a major factor in Instagram's algorithm, the more you interact with your audience, the more the platform will prioritize your posts in their feeds.

Use hashtags effectively

Using just one hashtag can increase the engagement rate of a post by 12.6%. Not only that, they also help ensure that your posts are seen by other users who are not following your account. To maximize their effectiveness, use 5-15 relevant hashtags in each post. If you use too many, Instagram can mark your posts as spam or hide them from accounts that don't follow you.

Post regularly

One of the most effective ways to build a loyal fan base and get people excited about your content is by posting regular posts. This shows that you are really making an effort and have developed a passion for what you do. It also gives you the opportunity to get in touch with your followers on a regular basis and strengthen your relationship with them. On the other hand, if you only post something every two months, your followers will lose interest in your content.

Join an Instagram engagement group

An Instagram engagement group is a private group made up of 10 to 15 accounts within the same niche that work together for guaranteed engagement. All you have to do is send members a message when you've created a new post and each of them will view it, like it and leave a good comment. You can find these groups through networking and interactions with other accounts in your niche or through Facebook. Once you're in a group, you need to follow the guidelines and do your part. Don't just take advantage of the benefits without helping the other members.
